IP
Telephony
A
Masthead Product
A platform from which your
business can communicate more effectively, all while utilizing your existing IP
pipe
it's everyone's dream, isn't it? It should be! Whether that statement
is clear as a bell, or you're not quite sure what it means, the following illustrations
should make a difference in your understanding of the wonderful world of IP Telephony.
Let's take a creative
look at IP Telephony:
Imagine a ship. Think of IP as that ship. A ship can accommodate passengers. Traveling
on this voyage as passengers are video, voice and data all going from one point
to another. They can all travel together on one ship. In the past, they would
each have to rent their own ships to travel, making the journey costly. With IP
Telephony, they are all speaking the same language and traveling on the same ship
to the same harbor. They are efficiently using transportation.
IP Telephony
applications and capabilities in the real world of business:
Centralized calling:
Now, with IP Telephony you can utilize existing pipe to enhance your phone system.
Take a large insurance office as an example. There can now be a phone system in
location B that acts exactly like the phone system at company headquarters. Let's
say there are 2000 agent offices for this company. Each of them can have their
own extension number. Everyone in that company, no matter their physical location
can then reach anyone in the 2000 agent offices just by dialing four digits. The
customer can now call in to a centralized customer service line. Not as many people
are needed to answer the phones. Customers can be directly transferred to another
location without having to redial a new number. A customer can talk directly to
any agent or on a conference call. In the end the customer is happier, and the
insurance agency wins. While this is just one industry example, you can imagine
the applications for your industry.
One IP box for all
the IP streams: When traffic from multiple IP streams are consolidated,
five or more boxes are no longer needed. Now every stream can go into one IP box.
Before IP Telephony, a complex system of boxes was necessary. Now everything can
be routed into a single box, all talking the same language. Pipe is now less expensive.
What was once a $1,000 cost is now a $50 cost. More pipe size for less money.
Desktop delivery:
Since the inception of IP Telephony, calling and messaging tasks like voice mail,
email and faxes could all be routed to a single end-user application, the desktop
personal computer. Through the unified messaging feature, an end user can now
determine if a call is a "can wait" or a "critical" call or
message. Desktop to desktop calls and video sessions complete with audio, phone
sessions and more are all possible on a desktop personal computer. Using IP Telephony
is a better way to utilize time.
