Frequently
Asked
Questions Our
Supreme Navigators Hear: (and the answers!)
What is IP Telephony?
If you're not used to hearing this word, get ready to have it become a part
of your everyday vocabulary. Soon we'll all be using this technology because we
won't be satisfied with our current communication capabilities. IP Telephony is
utilizing the IP transport mechanism to distribute voice, video and data in a
standard telephony format. That means greater capabilities right at your own desktop
PC. Traditional phone, email and fax methods pale in comparison to communication
using IP Telephony.
What is convergence?
While all technology definitions constantly evolve, the current definition
is the migrating of voice and video in a common transport method, which is currently
being used by the data industry. In other words, convergence is moving voice and
video to the common IP stream that data uses right now.
What is the advantage
of IP convergence?
Imagine a river where one boat could fit through a stream affordably. Rent is
being paid to float the boat down the river, but the boat has room for only one
sailor. Then the boat size changes. Suddenly more sailors can jump on board that
same boat. Obviously, the boat is being used more efficiently. This analogy is
what is happening with convergence.
Where do we see IP
convergence technologies going?
With the decreased cost of bandwidth between locations and providers, companies
can now utilize more voice, video and data streaming methods to make business
communication better. Enhanced customer service, internal relationships and a
decrease in cost are the results.
At this time most IP convergence technologies are identified as video, desktop
to desktop or video conferencing, IP Telephony and data. These technologies provide
companies with huge utilization efficiencies within existing networks. It's all
pretty exciting! With the addition of voice recognition, inexpensive video at
the desktop and transparent voice conversations, seamless voice integration throughout
the entire network will become an everyday occurrence.
How much does this
cost?
Cost is relative to how much the capabilities offered meet your needs. If
it is determined that these technologies meet a definite need in your communications
strategy, most corporations will find payback on investment in less than a year.

What does Data Stream
have to do with Nortel Networks?
We have partnered with Nortel Networks because of their strength in the data communications
arena. They are the industry leaders in the current legacy PBX systems. Their
huge market share poses them to have strategic partnerships with video providers,
the best in the business. As a complete system provider, they enable us to add
on to your existing product without having to start from scratch. In essence,
you can get a complete system from one quality provider.
I'm in a legacy system
right now, why should I switch?
You wouldn't actually switch, but rather you would migrate. With Nortel Networks,
it's an easy migration to an IP platform. You don't discard your current system-it
becomes part of a redeployment process. The peace of mind comes from knowing you
now have a platform you can build on for the future.
Isn't buying another
legacy system an option for me also?
Everything's an option, but not necessarily a wise option. It's like investing
in a dinosaur. Why would you? You want to invest in something that can grow with
you into the future.
